If the most intelligent AI systems are also the least cooperative, we might find ourselves trusting them for their analytical capabilities but not for advancing collective societal goals. Shirado warns that without fostering collective benefits and social cooperation, AI could impede rather than promote societal advancement.
The study involved numerous economic games intended to simulate real-world scenarios, requiring AI to decide between fostering collective benefit or punishing non-cooperation. Consistently, smarter reasoning models exhibited reluctance to cooperate, sometimes even inhibiting the contributions of cooperative non-reasoning models by as much as 81%.
These findings underscore the urgent need to incorporate social intelligence into AI development, in addition to cognitive advancements. Without a moral framework, there is a risk of developing systems that perpetuate anti-social behaviors, ultimately hindering the potential for a cooperative society.
