In a significant leap towards urban sustainability, a team from NYU Tandon School of Engineering, led by Rumi Chunara, has harnessed AI to precisely map urban green spaces. Traditionally, urban planners have struggled to accurately track greenery using satellite imagery, often missing up to 37% of vegetation. The new AI system, however, enhances accuracy by 13.4% through a method known as “green augmentation,” which involves training the system with varied images of plant life across different conditions.
This AI innovation was tested in Karachi, Pakistan, where it revealed significant socio-environmental inequalities. The study highlighted that more affluent neighborhoods boast lush greenery, whereas less affluent areas severely lack adequate green spaces. Karachi’s average of just 4.17 square meters of green space per person falls short of the World Health Organization’s suggested 9 square meters.
Green spaces are critical for cooling urban heat, filtering pollution, and providing recreational areas, impacting both physical and mental health. Karachi’s shortfall starkly contrasts with cities like Singapore, which, owing to strategic planning, exceeds WHO’s green space recommendations. Singapore’s success shows what cities can achieve with dedicated urban planning.
The AI system’s ability to identify vegetation with 89.4% accuracy and 90.6% reliability is a notable improvement from past benchmarks of 63.3% accuracy and 64.0% reliability. Published in the ACM Journal on Computing and Sustainable Societies, this research makes its methodology accessible so it can be applied to other urban areas worldwide.
The implications of this development extend beyond mere mapping. It equips urban planners and policy makers with critical data to address environmental disparities, thus promoting justice while enhancing urban living conditions.
